Get Tanned, But Not Burnt

It’s Saturday, the last weekend of the school holiday for all the children in New Zealand. The sun is shining bright, daylight saving started. Compared to the previous years, we should be running in the sun and having fun on our deck or at a playground. I hope online education will come to an end sometime soon. Children can enjoy themselves under the sun and play with their friends rather than spending the whole day with their electronic devices.

As I have mentioned, I live in New Zealand so, our summer starts in December till February. White Christmas will never happen for us. Our Christmas tradition is more about eating ice cream in our bikinis on the beach. Getting tan in summer is something that we always longed for, but sadly in many cases, getting burnt is also something that many kiwis get in summer, along with the tan or tan lines.

I always mention UV radiation is harmful when we expose ourselves without using any protection. It may cause diseases such as skin cancer and damages our skin cells, which leads to all sorts of skin conditions and health conditions. Even if you have applied the sunscreen before going out, remember it doesn’t last the whole day. On average, we need to reapply the sunscreen every 2-4 hours when having outdoor activities.

How To Choose The Right Sunscreen? 

There are many sunscreens available on the shelves in the supermarket, and which is the best one to choose?

First, there are two types of sunscreen, mineral sunscreens and chemical sunscreens. These two types of sunscreens are both effective in preventing our skin from getting sunburn. They use a different mechanism to filter out the UV rays to protect the skin from getting damaged. 

Mineral Sunscreen: 

Mineral sunscreens defend against the UV rays by acting as a physical blocker, by deflecting and scattering the UV rays away from our skin. Mineral sunscreen may sometimes be called sunblock or physical sunscreen.

There are a few pros and cons to wearing mineral sunscreen. The pro about wearing mineral sunscreen is that you don’t need to for 20 minutes after application before going out. It’s better for those who have sensitive and acne-prone skin. The downside about it is the white, chalky look when you apply it to your skin. 

Mineral sunscreens often contain active ingredients such as zinc oxide, titanium oxide or a combination of both. 

Chemical Sunscreen: 

Chemical sunscreens protect our skin from UV radiation by absorbing the UV radiation rather than scattering or reflecting it. Chemical sunscreens are highly effective and yet can be formulated with lightweight ingredients. Active ingredients that are used in chemical sunscreens can include avobenzone, octinoxate and oxybenzone. 

The pro facts about chemical sunscreens are it’s easily spread on the skin, are great for daily wear and doesn’t leave a ghostly residue. Chemical sunscreens can protect our skin from both UVA and UVB radiation, protect our skin cells from getting damaged and reduce the development of skin cancer.  

The con about wearing chemical sunscreen is, it may irritate people who suffer from sensitive skin. Some known chemical sunscreen causes allergy reactions.

Which sunscreen to choose if you got acne-prone skin?

From my own experience, mineral sunscreens may be the best choice because they have a lesser chance to cause breakouts due to the nature of the ingredients. I always look for sunscreens that say “non-comedogenic”. Avoid ingredients like beeswax, lanolin, and unknown source of vitamin E. Those ingredients are great to maintain moisture in the skin, but they may also clog pores. There are a few sunscreens out labelled for acne-prone skin and, the ones that I always stick to are, Avenue tinted sunscreen SPF30+ during winter and autumn seasons and La Roche Posay SPF 50+ Tinted sunscreen during the season spring and summer on the face. I do get allergy reactions on my arms and legs when using certain chemical sunscreens. The ones that did not cause any allergy reactions are: 

  • NU SKIN: Sunright Sunscreen Lotion SPF0+ 
  • Cetaphil: Ultra-light Lotion SPF50+ 
  • Skinstitut: Age Defences SPF 50+

These are the most effective with protecting my skin from getting burnt, and no allergy reactions occurred. These are the sunscreens highly loved by many customers who have skin problems and need good sun protection.
